CCSU Downs Seahawks in Last Race of Meet, 131-129

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner women's swimming team lost to Northeast Conference rivals Central Connecticut State University 131-129 in the final meet of the regular season. With this loss, the Seahawks drop their only conference meet on the year to finish 6-3 overall.

It all came down to the last race, the 400 yard medley relay, with Wagner leading CCSU 123-120. The Seahawks relay team led for most of the race, but it was Blue Devils anchor swimmer Erin Crowley who pushed on to take the lead and helped CCSU to finish in first with a time of 3:39.00. The Seahawks finished in second place at 3:40.90.

The rest of the race was just as exciting as the end with each team alternating first place finishers in most of the events. In total, Wagner swimmers placed first in six of the 14 events. They key to their staying within striking distance of the Blue Devils was taking second and third place in six of the eight races CCSU placed first.

Leading Wagner in the battle to the end was junior swimmer Alexandra Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton) with first place finishes in the 200 freestyle (1:56.92) and 500 freestyle (5:06.18) while pulling in second place in the 200 backstroke (2:13.85). Senior Lindsey Rodgers (Anaheim Hills, CA/Canyon/Fullerton JC) brought in two first place finishes of her own in the 50 freestyle (24.94) and 100 freestyle (54.38).

Other first place swimmers for the Seahawks include freshman Bethny Brown (Enfield, CT/Ennco Fermi High) in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.26) and sophomore Melanie Rodriguez-Lapman (Chesire, CT/Chesire) in the 200 breaststroke (2:33.28).

The Seahawks will take a break from competition until the Northeast Conference Championships taking place February 14-16 in New Haven, CT.
