Tennis Defeats SFNY For First Win Of The Year

Flushing Meadows, NY - The Wagner men's tennis team picked up its first victory of the season by a 6-1 count against St. Francis (NY) at the National Tennis Center. With the win, the Seahawks even their record at 1-1 while the Terriers drop to 0-1.

The Seahawks dominated singles play, winning five of the six matches. Senior Will Shuler (Springfield, MA / Central Springfield) played a golden match as he did not commit a single error throughout the entire match, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Kichen Smith at No. 5 singles.

Sophomore John LeBlanc (Staten Island, NY / Tottenville) rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Elan Evans at No. 2 singles. Classmate Ben Serbiak (Washington Crossing, PA / Holy Ghost Prep) earned a hard-fought 6-1, 7-5 victory over Tyrone Fordham at No. 3 singles. At fourth singles, sophomore Byron Clohessy shut out Pete Liota 6-0, 6-0. Junior Sheldon Wilson won by forfeit at No. 6 singles.

At No.1 singles, senior Adam Amster (Concord, MA / Concord-Carlisle) fell to highly regarded Jindrich Chaloupka 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles play, LeBlanc and Serbiak defeated Fordham and Liota at second doubles 8-1 while Shuler and Wilson won by forfeit at No. 3 to take the doubles' point.

Wagner is next in action on Saturday when the Seahawks host Fordham at 12:00 pm.
