Staten Island, NY - Wagner (1-0) blanked Robert Morris (0-1) 7-0 in the Seahawks' season opener at the Wagner Tennis Courts while avenging last season's loss in Moon Township, PA with a dominating team effort.
At No.1 singles, junior Brittany Frazza (West Caldwell, NJ / Morris Catholic) dominated Kali DeLorie 6-1 in the first game before DeLorie retired due to injury. Senior Aarti Mahtani (Montego Bay, Jamaica / Saint Andrew's) won a thriller over Libby Shaw at No. 2 singles 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5). Junior Emily Boyd (Stratham, NH / Exeter Area) was dominant at No. 3, posting a 6-2, 6-4 win against Laura Meyer. Senior Marie Crane (Cheshire, CT / Cheshire) shut down Bethany Mahaffey 6-2, 6-1 at fourth singles. At No. 5, sophomore Valerie LeCureux (Jamison, PA / Central Bucks East) won in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 over Georgia Barlamas while freshman Stephanie Esgro completed the singles sweep with an easy 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ashley Davis at No. 6.
Wagner took all three doubles' matches to claim the last point of the match. Frazza and Mahtani won 8-3 at No. 1. Crane and LeCureux combined for the 8-4 win at No. 2 while Esgro and freshman Joanna Ciavarella won 8-2 at No. 3.
Wagner is next in action on Tuesday at 3:30 pm when the Green & White travel to local rival St. Francis (NY).
