Staten Island, NY - The Seahawks swept visiting Manhattan by scores of 4-3 and 5-4 at the Lower Athletic Field today. Wagner has now won 18 of their last 19 games and improved their overall mark to 30-16 this season. The Jaspers fall to 4-40.
In game one junior Victoria Batistelli (Huntington Beach, CA / Huntington Beach) helped give Wagner a 3-0 lead in the second inning with a lead off solo home run to left, her ninth of the year and 25th career. A single by grad student Joy Gallagher (Hazleton, PA / Hazleton) and back-to-back two out run scoring doubles from senior Christina Hopkins (Edison, NJ / Edison) and sophomore Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ / Paramus Catholic) then accounted for the other two runs.
Manhattan came back with two runs in the top of the third capitalizing on two Wagner errors. Liz Strein scored the first run on an error after drawing a leadoff walk. Later on Candice Sheridan's RBI single through the left side scored another run before Hopkins nailed a runner at the plate from left field to keep the Seahawks in the lead (3-2).
Vanore had another RBI in the fourth inning as the score went to 4-2 in favor of Wagner. Her two out single into left scored Gallagher who reached on her second hit of the game with a leadoff single. In the fifth, the Jaspers got another run when Strein singled and once again came around to score on an error.
The four runs would be all senior Morgan Miller's (Las Vegas, NV / Silverado) would need. Miller allowed just two hits and the three unearned runs while improving to 13-7 on the year.
After 3 1/3 no hit innings by freshman Danielle Wagoner (Temecula, CA / Temecula Valley) to start game two, Manhattan benefited from two more Seahawk errors in the fourth inning. The Jaspers scored twice on a sacrifice fly to center by Sheridan and a RBI single from Devon Gustafson. As she did in the first game, Hopkins killed another rally by throwing a run out at home from center to end the inning and leave the Seahawks trailing 2-0.
Wagner would respond in the bottom of the fifth by scoring two unearned runs of their own to tie the game up at 2-2. Vanore, who had singled earlier in the inning, and junior Katie Stevens (Reno, NV / Wooster) scored on a two-out error by the Manhattan right fielder.
The game remained scoreless through the next two innings and would be decided in extra frames. The Jaspers scored first in the eighth as they sacrificed the runner from second to third on a bunt before Liz Strein, who was placed on second at the start of the inning, was brought home on a line-drive hit by Danielle Just.
Wagner would get that run back in the bottom of the inning as junior Ami Iwicki (Ringoes, NJ / Hunterdon Central) plated Batistelli, who had advanced to third on a Gallagher sacrifice bunt.
After the Jaspers scored another run in the top of the ninth the Seahawks loaded the base loaded the bases on a fielder's choice and a bunt base hit by freshman Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV / McQueen). After Stevens drew a walk to tie the game up at 4-4, Gallagher smoked a base hit to deep left center to bring around Vanore and give Wagner the thrilling 5-4 win to complete the doubleheader sweep and give the Green & White their 30th win of the season.
Miller picked up the win in relief to move to 14-7. Despite the no decision Wagoner was exceptional in the circle giving up just two unearned runs while striking out two against zero walks over 8.0 innings.
Wagner ends the regular season on Saturday when Northeast Conference foe Central Connecticut St. pays a visit to the Lower Athletic Field.
