April 7, 2007

Stats

Villanova, PA --Following an 18-14 win over Villanova to open MAAC play the Wagner women's water polo team fell to conference rival Marist by a count of 7-6 in overtime earlier this afternoon in a game played at Villanova University. With the loss Wagner falls to 9-12 (1-1 MAAC) and loses to Marist for the second time this season.

The Green & White started off slow as they went scoreless in the first period while allowing the Red Foxes to build a 2-0 lead after one. The second period was more of the same for the Wagner offense until they cracked the scoring column via a goal by Yvette Viramontes (Montebello, CA/Montebello) drawing the score to 2-1. Marist answered with another score moments later and led at the intermission 3-1.

Wagner finally got on track in a third quarter as they rebounded with three straight scores to start the third in this contest. Stacey Travous (New Ulm, MN/Cumberland Valley) netted two goals while junior Billy Hoelck (San Diego, CA/U. of San Diego HS) drew a five meter penalty and then converted the shot. All this action had given the Seahawks a 4-3 advantage, their first lead of the game, but Marist countered with a score late in the period, and the game moved to the fourth knotted up at four.

In the fourth quarter Marist took advantage of a double ejection on Wagner and used the six on four advantage to tally a score. Undaunted, the Seahawks battled back when Camille Karimzad (Walnut Creek, CA/Campolindo) floated one in to the net tying the score at five. A flurry of action closed out the fourth quarter of play with neither side able to take the deciding score.

The game moved to the standard two period overtime session with Marist scoring the lone goal in the first period. In the second overtime period Marist would tack on another score to lead 7-5. Senior co-captain Natasha Peterson (Whittier, CA/La Habra) kept Wagner alive with a tally at the 1:21 mark of the period. However, the Seahawks would be unable to connect on their last possession with under a minute remaining and lost the game by one.

Senior Katie Hauck (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) played all the way through in net discarding 11 shots and pilfering four steals.

The Seahawks are back in action next weekend when they venture to Marist College and Siena College for a full slate of MAAC action.
