Final Stats
Fairfield, CT - Trailing by five goals in the second half, the Wagner women's lacrosse team rallied to within one goal, but came up short in the final outcome as they were defeated 12-10 by host Sacred Heart in Northeast Conference action today. The loss puts the Seahawks at 1-3 in the NEC and 2-7 overall while the Pioneers end the day at 2-3 in the NEC and 4-6 overall.
The Pioneers came out firing from the opening draw control as Katie Salamone found the back of the net 1:30 into the contest for an early 1-0 Sacred Heart lead. Sophomore Cara Gonzalez (Syracuse, NJ / Westhill) helped even the count two minutes later as she fed freshman Teri Noll (Jordan, NY / Jordan-Elbridge) with her team leading 12th assist of the season.
The scoring continued for Sacred Heart as a 6-1 tally ensued which helped extend the advantage to 8-3 before a score from senior Jenelle Spatarella (Rocky Point, NY / Rocky Point) in the final two minutes left the Seahawks down 8-4 at the half.
Brianna Bubeck, the Pioneers leading scorer, recorded her 30th goal of the season to open the second half scoring as Sacred Heart held on to a 9-4 lead. Less than 30 seconds later, freshman Janine Bright (Commack, NY / Commack) helped awaken the Wagner offense scoring off an assist from sophomore Kelly Blundin (Plymouth Meeting, PA / Whitemarsh). Gonzalez continued the run with an unassisted goal followed by a free positing score the pull Wagner with in two at 9-7.
After two more Pioneer goals, senior Jessica Ellis (Fairport, NY / Fairport) scored her third goal of the game off a helper from Spatarella to ignite another 3-0 Seahawks stretch. Freshman Krista Malayter (Cheshire, CT / Cheshire) and Noll followed Ellis with free position goals as Wagner now trailed 11-10 with 13:52 still remaining on the clock.
The Seahawks comeback would stop there how ever as Liz Ottey ended her four point day fro Sacred Heart with the final goal of the game at 10:05 to account for the final outcome. After a pair of saves by goalie Chelsea Wagner on Wagner's next two possessions, the Pioneers forced a turnover at the 6:00 minute mark and never looked back keeping the ball in their possession the rest of the way.
Wagner was out shot 20-14 in the first half but held a 12-10 advantage in the second period. Gonzalez had three points and a team high four draw controls while Ellis produced a team best four points (3 goals; 1 assist) and two ground balls. Freshman Alyssa Prima (Medford Lakes, NJ / Shawnee) added three draw controls and a ground ball for Wagner.
In goal, freshman Alex Johnston (Manlius, NY / Manlius-Fayetteville) and sophomore Amy Jones (Jarrettsville, MD / N. Harford) combined for six saves in 30 minutes of play each.
Wagner continues a Connecticut road swing on Saturday at 1:00 pm when they travel to Quinnipiac.
