Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College women's lacrosse team were victorious this afternoon on Senior Day at Wagner College Stadium, besting the visiting Central Connecticut State Blue Devils (3-12, 1-7 NEC), 14-7. Three Seahawk seniors lead the way with goals - including senior midfielder Jessica Ellis (Fairport, NY/Fairport) who had a game-high three - giving the Green & White a final 2007 record of 4-12 overall and 3-5 in the Northeast Conference.
The Seahawks took a 4-3 lead into halftime after sophomore attack Jessica Richmond (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) scored her second goal of the contest with 2:37 left on an assist from freshman midfielder Krista Malayter (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire). This was less than twenty seconds after Malayter had fired successfully for her own unassisted goal, evening up with the Blue Devils at three goals apiece.
The second half would prove to belong to the Seahawks as they would build a firm lead on the heels of a 7-1 run in the last 11:30 of the game, receiving big goals from seniors like attack Amanda Scalzo (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire), who finished the game with two, attack Jenelle Spatarella (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point), who also had two, and once again Jessica Ellis, who capped off the win with the last goal of the game - and her career - with 15 seconds left making it a 14-7 final and a win for Wagner.
Freshman goalkeeper Alex Johnston (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) got credit for the win in goal as she spent just under 50 minutes in the cage, recording seven saves. Sophomore Amy Jones (Jarrettsville, MD/North Harford) finished out the remaining ten minutes for the Seahawks, recording one save.
