Brooklyn, NY --The Wagner College women's water polo team made it four wins in a row after they knocked off Siena College for the second time this season 12-9 in a game played at St. Francis College. The victory puts the Seahawks back at the .500 mark at 14-14 with a record of 6-3 in MAAC play.
The Green & White struck first in this contest when senior Stacey Travous (New Ulm, MN/Cumberland Valley) found the back of the net just a minute and thirteen seconds into the game. The Saints of Siena would counter with a goal of their own a minute later and the score was tied at two. Junior Billy Hoelck (San Diego, CA/U. of San Diego HS) then scored two straight goals to push the Wagner lead to 3-1. Siena countered with two straight goals of their own to close out the first period and start the second and the game was knotted at three.
Later in the second quarter sophomore Alexandra Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton) started to go to work on the offensive end scoring two straight goals within fifty seconds of each other to build a 5-3 Seahawk advantage. Siena added a goal before the half to make it a one goal lead for Wagner at the intermission.
The third quarter saw Wagner go into a funk as the Saints came out aggressively notching two scores to take their first lead of the game at 6-5 with 2:08 to go. Then following the theme of this game in which different players scored back to back goals Camille Karimzad (Walnut Creek, CA/Campolindo) stepped up and fired one into the net with 1:02 to go in the third. Karimzad then lobbed one past the Siena goalkeeper as time expired in the quarter to give the Seahawks the lead back at 7-6 headed to the final frame.
In the fourth it was all Wagner as the Seahawks outscored the Loudonville, New York natives 5-3. The Seahawks put the game away early in the quarter as Tomlinson added the third of her four goals on the day while junior Amber McMichael (Reading, PA/Gov. Mifflin) notched a score to go along with four assists for the game.
The rest of the scoring came on another goal each by Tomlinson and Hoelck while current MAAC Co-Rookie of the Week Yvette Viramontes (Montebello, CA/Montebello) iced the proverbial cake with a score at the one minute mark. Senior Katie Hauck (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) patrolled the net effectively denying five shots while registering two steals.
Wagner will be back in action later today when they take on the home team St. Francis College Terriers at 4:30 pm in the last game of the regular season.
