West Windsor, NJ - No. 8 Wagner defeated No. 9 Saint Francis (PA) 4-3 in three-plus hour marathon in the women's NEC Tournament outbracket match at the Mercer County Tennis Center. The Green & White (6-11) then ran into the buzzsaw that is the defending NEC champion and No. 1 seed Quinnipiac Bobcats, losing 4-0.
Sophomore Brittany Frazza (West Caldwell, NJ / Morris Catholic) dominated Becky Seybold 6-1, 6-0 for her ninth win of the season. At No. 2 singles, junior Aarti Mahtani (Montego Bay, Jamaica / Saint Andrews's) pulled out a tough 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (8) win against Danielle Gauthier. Junior Marie Crane (Cheshire, CT / Cheshire) came from behind beat Eva Keresztes 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Emily Boyd (Stratham, NH / Exeter Area) was handed a 6-4, 6-2 loss at the hands of Mallary Palmer. Freshman Valerie LeCureux (Jamison, PA / Central Bucks East) lost a tough 6-2, 6-7 (9), 6-2 decision to Ashley Zalewski won at No. 5 singles. SFPA won No. 6 singles by default.
Wagner won the match by claiming the doubles' point.
In doubles action, Frazza and Crane defeated Gauthier and Keresztes at first doubles handily 8-3 while Mahtani and LeCureux bested Palmer and Zalewski 8-6 at second doubles. SFPA won third doubles by default.
The Seahawks had little time to rest before their match with top-seeded Quinnipiac. The Bobcats won by a convincing 4-0 score and were leading in all other matches at the conclusion of the match.
Mahtani lost to Mary Wilson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Also losing by the same score was Crane at third singles against Jackie Herb. Quinnipiac took sixth singles by forfeit and captured the doubles' point to take the match and move on to the semifinals.
At first doubles, Gabby Pasternak and Wilson defeated Frazza and Crane 8-1 while Mahtani and LeCureux were set down by the same score against Amanda Petruzzi and Herb at No. 2.
Wagner will conclude their season tomorrow in the consolation bracket at 9 am when they square off with No. 5 Fairleigh Dickinson.
