Seahawks Grounded By Gaels 11-9 For Second Straight MAAC Loss

April 15, 2007

Stats

Loudonville, NY --The Wagner College Seahawks water polo team made it two straight losses in MAAC play as they were beaten by Iona College 11-9 earlier this morning in a game played at Siena College. With the loss Wagner now drops to 10-14 (2-2 MAAC) on the season with one more game this afternoon against Siena College at 1:30 pm.

Wagner came out flat to start this game and found themselves in a 2-0 hole with 2:09 to play in the first. Goals by Alexandra Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton) and Yvette Viramontes (Montebello, CA/Montebello) would tie the score at two with 1:01 to play, however things would go sour from there. The lackluster effort continued into the second period as Iona would proceed to run off five straight goals to build a 7-2 advantage with 2:57 to go in the first half.

The Seahawks began the process of chipping away at the deficit as Billy Hoelck (San Diego, CA/U. of San Diego HS) and Nicole Maichrowicz (Temple City, CA/Temple City) each found the back of the net and Wagner trailed 7-4 at the half. Yet, coming out of the half the Gaels went back on the offensive hitting on two straight scores to rebuild their lead to 9-4. After that Hoelck scored and then Viramontes tallied two straight goals, one of which came on a five meter penalty shot, and the Seahawks were back in the game at 9-7.

Iona score again with just under two minutes remaining in the third period which was followed by Maichrowicz hitting on her second score to again make it a two goal deficit at 10-8. All of the offense would come to a screeching halt in the fourth quarter as Iona tallied a goal and Hoelck added her third of the game to again bring the score to within two at 11-9 Iona.

That would be all the offense in this contest as Wagner was unable to muster one last rally over the final 2:45 and fell by the final score of 11-9. Senior Katie Hauck (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) played the whole way in net impounding 12 Gael shots.

Wagner will have no time to harp on this loss as they return to the pool at 1:30 to take on the host Siena College Saints.
