Staten Island, NY - Mount St. Mary's (14-15; 4-2 NEC) used a four-run seventh inning in a come-from-behind 7-4 win over Wagner (8-18; 3-3 NEC) to gain a doubleheader sweep earlier today at Dr. Bill Willetts Field.
The Mountaineers scored first on Eric Smith's groundout to go up 1-0. Wagner answered immediately scoring three times in the bottom of the first. Junior Peter Delleani (Manalapan, NJ / CBA) got the two-out rally going with an infield single. Freshman Vin Avella (Matawan, NJ / CBA) moved Delleani to second when he with a 0-2 single to right field. Senior Matt Mastrianni (Ringoes, NJ / Hunterdon Central) continued the hit-parade with a single up the middle to plate Delleani and tie up the score. On the play, Avella moved to third while Mastrianni advanced to second on the throw home. Classmate Ed Sudol (Wallington, NJ / Wallington) singled through the left side scoring Avella and Mastrianni to put Wagner in front 3-1. Freshman Joe Conforti (Staten Island, NY / Farrell) then narrowly missed a home run, doubling to right field while moving Sudol to third. However Mount St. Mary's starter Bucky Kosyk would get the next batter to strike out.
The Mount would tie up the game at 3-3 in the third on Ryan Murray's two-run home run to left-center.
The Seahawks would wrestle the lead back in the fourth when freshman Damian Csakai (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) brought home Sudol with an RBI ground out.
After third-inning home run, Wagner-starter freshman Bobby Tretola (Union, NJ / Roselle Catholic) settled down retiring the last 10 batters he faced and left with a 4-3 lead. He struck out two against zero walks and gave up just three earned runs on six hits over 6.0 innings.
In the seventh, the Mount bats came to life as Stephan Fay doubled to lead off the frame. Matt Trusch bunted him over on a fielder's choice as junior Joe Testa's (Brick, NJ / Brick) throw was not in time at third. The Mountaineers tied up the game when Matt Eiden looped a single into centerfield. Following a sacrifice bunt, Ivor Hodgson singled to put the Mountaineers up 5-4 and moved to second on a Seahawk-error. Josh Vittek then doubled home two more runs to make it 7-4.
The Seahawks would not go down without a fight as sophomore Chris Drechsel (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) and senior Joseph DiGeronimo (Hawthorne, NJ / Hawthorne) each singled to give the Seahawks a first-and-third one-out situation while chasing Kosyk. Relief pitcher Mike Matta entered and on his first pitch induced a game-ending double-play for his second save of the year.
Kosyk struck out eight against one walk while yielding four runs, three earned, over 6.1 innings to improve to 2-2. Testa fell to 1-4 with the loss.
Sudol was 2-3 with two RBI while Delleani also recorded two hits to lead Wagner.
The two teams will wrap up their series tomorrow at 12 pm with another doubleheader.
