Wagner Drops Offensive Shootout at Bucknell, 19-12

Lewisburg, PA - The Wagner women's lacrosse team dropped an offensive shootout 19-12 at Bucknell University in non-league action in a light rain this evening. Despite the 12 goals, which were the second most scored by the Seahawks this season, the team fell to 2-10 on the year. Bucknell went to 5-7 with the win.

After not recording a point he the past two games, sophomore Kelly Blundin (Plymouth Meeting, PA / Plymouth Whitemarsh) matched her career high with four goals and set a new career mark with six points to lead four multi-goal scorers for the Seahawks.

Bucknell jumped on Wagner early outscoring the Seahawks 8-1 in the first 13 minutes of play. Sophomore Jessica Richmond (Jenkintown, PA / Jenkintown) finally ended a six goal streak by the Bison with an unassisted goal at 16:38, but Bonnie Beuchel, who scored three first half goals, found the back of the net again for Bucknell two minutes later as the Seahawks remained down by seven (9-2).

Wagner mounted a 3-1 run to close out the half behind the strength of two goals by freshman Janine Bright (Commack, NY / Commack). Blundin also scored off an assist from freshman Teri Noll (Jordan, NY / Jordan-Elbridge). The second year attack would keep the Seahawk momentum going in the second half as she score less than two minutes into the period which left Wagner down 10-6.

The comeback hit a halt as three different Bucknell players scored in the next five minutes to drowned out a tally from Noll and put the Bison back ahead 13-7. The freshman midfielder then set off a 5-0 Wagner stretch and as she recorded a career best three goals with back-to-back scores in the next two minutes of action. One game after her 27 game point steak was halted, sophomore Cara Gonzalez (Syracuse, NY / Westhill) posted her second assist of the game on a goal by Blundin and then followed wither her second goal of the game. Blundin ended the run with her fourth notch of the contest as Wagner closed to within a single goal at 13-12 with 11:35 left on the clock.

Following the 12-minute Seahawk flourish, the Bison took over the game down the stretch. Bucknell outscored Wagner 6-0 in the final 11 minutes of the game as the Green and White suffered their fourth straight defeat.

Behind Blundin's six points, Noll (3 goals; 1 assist) and Gonzalez (2 goals; 2 assists) produced four points each. Junior Jessica Bajkowski (Fairfax, VA / Robinson) picked up a team high five ground balls for the Seahawks. The Bison had six multi goal scorers in the game led by four each from Beuchel and Peters.

Freshman Alex Johnston (Manlius, NY / Manlius-Fayetteville) played the first 30 minutes in goal making seven saves. Sophomore Amy Jones (Jarrettsville, MD / N. Harford) took over in the second half stopping five shots.

Wagner's 34 shots were the second most this season but Bucknell outshot the Seahawks 23-13 in the first 30 minutes. The Bison held a 23-10 edge in draw controls and converted on 7-11 free position shots. Wagner was 2-4 from the free position area.

The Seahawks return to action on Thursday when they travel to Bucknell for a non-league contest.
