Staten Island, NY --The Wagner College track and field squad played host to the Wagner Invitational yesterday at Wagner College Stadium and it was a glorious day for the Green & White as they notched the most first place finishes out of any school in attendance.
Starting first with the women, it was a solid day for sophomore Alaina Alfano (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) as she notched a first place mark in the long jump at 5.50 meters. She added to that a first place time in the 100 meter hurdles at 15.37, a fourth place time in the 100 meter dash at 12.88, and was part of a second place finish in the 4x100 relay at 50.35.
Jocelyn Ford (Neptune, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) who joined Alfano on that relay also took third in the 400 meter dash at 1:00.64, and was followed in fourth by twin sister Jessica Ford (Neptune, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) at 1:01.03. Samantha Snukis (St. Clair, PA/Nativity BVM) was good for first in the 800 meter run at 2:22.73, and added to that a second place time in the 400 meter hurdles at 1:06.26, and was part of a first place team in the 4x800 meter relay.
The Seahawks garnered another first place time when Brecken Drager (Loomis, CA/Del Oro) won the 1500 meter run in convincing fashion posting a time of 4:49.39. Noemie Wilson (Windsor, CO/Windsor) took second in the 100 hurdles behind Alfano at 15.82, while adding a third place mark in the 400 hurdles at 1:07.09. Freshman Jenna Naglieri (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland) won the most lopsided race of the day taking the 3,000 meter steeplechase at 12:35.76, close to five minutes ahead of her competitor.
Another freshman in Amanda Gland (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug) has a good day with a second place mark behind Alfano in the long jump at 5.25 meters, she came back and took the triple jump crown with a distance of 10.48 meters. In the throwing events, Ashley Simon (King of Prussia, PA/Upper Merion Area) was good for second in the shotput at 11.34 meters, while Crystal Smith (Zenda, WI/Big Foot) nailed down second in the discus at 36.10. Simon was not finished however she took third in the discus at 36.09 meters and second in the hammer throw at 42.35 meters. Teammate Gwendolyn Moore (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) was right behind Simon in the hammer, in third place at 37.80 meters.
Turning to the men, Mouhamed Halwani (Staten Island, NY/Xaverian) took fourth place in the 1500 meter run at 4:06.81 while Kyle Sultzer (Archbald, PA/Valley View) grabbed third in the 5000 meter run at 15:33.79. The 400 meter hurdles saw Matthew Villane (Monmouth Beach, NJ/Shore) end in third place at 56.54 while classmate James Johnston (Middle Island, NY/Longwood) cruised to victory in the 3000 meter steeplechase at 10:19.45. Dan Mercorelli (North Haledon, NJ/De Paul Catholic) notched a third place mark in the long jump at 6.46 meters, and Blake Lintelman (Coral Springs, FL/West Point) was good for third place in the shotput at 13.78 meters and fourth in the discus at 36.46 meters.
Wagner is next in action next weekend when they take part in a meet hosted by Richard Stockton College in southern New Jersey.
