Seahawks Crush Lafayette 13-7

March 29, 2007

Box Score

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner Seahawks pounded Lafayette earlier today 13-7 as every Seahawk starter had at least one hit. Senior Ed Sudol (Wallington, NJ / Wallington) led the charge going 3-5 at the plate with two triples and five RBI. With the win the Green & White improve to 4-11 while the Leopards fall to 8-10.

Wagner came out swinging as they matched their season high with 17 hits while stranding just six runners after leaving 15 on board in each of their last two games.

Lost in the Wagner offensive-surge was the performance by sophomore rhp Andrew Huebner (Hatfield, PA / North Penn). Huebner struck out three in five innings while yielding just three runs on five hits in moving to 1-0 on the season.

The Seahawks struck first in the bottom of the third when freshman Joe Conforti (Staten Island, NY / Farrell) doubled home sophomore Chris Drechsel (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) to make it 1-0. The Leopards answered with two runs in the top of the fourth to take a one-run lead. From that point on it was all Wagner.

The Green & White loaded the bases on a pair of walks and an error before Sudol blasted his first triple of the day to clear the bases and put Wagner up 4-2. Freshman Vin Avella (Manalapan, NJ / CBA) then brought home Sudol with a double to left field. Classmate Kevin McDonnell (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) continued the barrage of hits with a single up the middle, scoring Avella. Drechsel capped the monster-inning with another single up the middle to put Wagner up 7-2. Tom Ambrosole got one run back when he hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth before the Seahawk-bats went back to work in the bottom part of the inning.

Wagner again loaded the bases to start the frame and Sudol delivered again with a base hit to centerfield that scored senior Joseph DiGeronimo (Hawthorne, NJ / Hawthorne). Following a strikeout McDonnell singled down the left field line, plating senior Matt Mastrianni (Ringoes, NJ / Hunterdon Central) and sophomore Pete Delleani (Manalapan, NJ / CBA) while putting Wagner up by an insurmountable margin of 10-3.

The Seahawk bats were not done as Delleani blasted a two-run home run, his second of the year, for good measure in the sixth while staking Wagner to a 12-4 lead. Sudol would cap his big-day with an RBI triple in the eighth.

Also turning in solid performances were Delleani (2 hits, 3 runs), Conforti (2 hits), Mastrianni (2 doubles, 2 runs), McDonnell (2 hits, 3 RBI) and freshman Damian Csakai (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) (2 hits). DiGeronimo also went 1-4 with three runs while extending his hitting streak to 17 games.

Brian Cope gave up four earned runs in one-plus inning of work to fall to 1-1. Daniel Bierce went 3-5 and Tom Ambrosole was 2-3 with a home run, two runs and two RBI to lead Lafayette.

Wagner now departs for warmer weather as they will play a three-game set at William Mary, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 pm.
