Wagner Downed By Griffins, 18-6

March 24, 2007

Box Score

Buffalo, NY - The Wagner College men's lacrosse team lost their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game to host Canisius College (2-3-0, 2-0-0 MAAC) this afternoon by the score of 18-6. They fall to a record of (0-7-0, 0-1-0 MAAC) on the season.

Once again the Seahawks enabled their opposition to get an early lead, as the Griffins jumped out to an early 4-1 advantage after the first period commenced. Senior captain Josh Hamilton (Millersville, MD/Severna Park) notched his team-leading seventh goal of the season from a pass from sophomore attack Evan Shull (Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) with 7:46 left in the opening stanza to keep the deficit at three goals.

That slim deficit would grow, however, in the second period, when the home Griffins went on a 5-1 tear led by senior attack Kevin Ross who would finish the game leading all scorers with four goals on the day.

The game, for the Seahawks however, would be out of reach from then on.

Junior attack Andrew Daly (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) would add two goals for the Seahawks as well, as he and Hamilton would tie for team lead in goals for the afternoon.

Once again, however, the Seahawks, keyed by junior midfielder Mike Hess (Potomac, MD/The Heights School) would win the battle of the face-offs, besting Canisius 15-12.

Between the pipes, it was senior goalkeeper Ian Gallagher (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) taking the brunt of the minutes - just shy of 52 - and coming up with 11 saves.

The Seahawks now come back to Staten Island and the friendly confines of Wagner College Stadium for a three-game homestand. First up are the Red Foxes of Marist, who they'll face off against next Sunday at 3 p.m.
