Princess Anne, MD - The Wagner Seahawks claimed their first win of the year by shutting out the University of Maryland Eastern Shore by a 5-0 count. The Green & White are now 1-5 while UMES falls to 0-10.
At No. 1 singles, sophomore Brittany Frazza (West Caldwell, NJ / Morris Catholic) won easily 8-3 over Nadia Flores Hernandez. Junior Aarti Mahtani (Montego Bay, Jamaica / Saint Andrews's) defeated Fatoumata Ba by the slimmest of margins 9-8 at second singles. At No. 3, classmate Marie Crane (Cheshire, CT / Cheshire) had no problem cruising to the 8-2 win over Haaveshe Sawyer. Sophomore Emily Boyd (Stratham, NH / Exeter Area) defeated Bolanle Abioye 8-3 at No. 4 singles. Freshman Valerie LeCureux (Jamison, PA / Central Bucks East) wrapped up the team's stellar performance with a 8-0 shutout win over Tonaio Swangin at No. 5 singles. Both teams defaulted at No. 6 singles.
There were no doubles matches due to the weather conditions and all singles-matches were scored as pro-sets.
The Seahawks will return to action on Saturday when they travel to NJIT for a 7 pm match.
