Box Score
Rock Hill, SC - The Wagner Seahawks got seven-strong innings from junior lhp Joe Testa (Brick, NJ / Brick) but it wasn't enough as they lost game three of their weekend series to Winthrop by a 3-1 score at the Winthrop Ballpark earlier this afternoon. With the loss the Seahawks fall to 3-7 on the season while the Eagles win the series and improve to 13-11.
After the first two games saw at least one team score in double figures this game would be decided by the starting pitchers, who were in complete control. Testa (0-2) was on his game striking out five while yielding just two earned runs on six hits and two walks in 7.0 innings. However Winthrop starter Josh McDonald (2-1) fanned nine while limiting Wagner to just one run on six hits while pitching his first collegiate complete game.
Winthrop struck first in the bottom of the third as Eddie Tisdale doubled to lead off the inning and scored later on in the inning on a double play.
Wagner would tie the score in the top of the fourth as senior Matt Mastrianni (Ringoes, NJ / Hunterdon Central) ripped his second double of the game to lead off the inning. Sophomore Peter Delleani (Manalapan, NJ / CBA) sacrificed Mastrianni over to third before senior Ed Sudol (Wallington, NJ / Wallington) sacrificed him home to tie the game up at 1-1.
The Eagles would quickly wrestle the lead back in the bottom of the fourth when Louis Ullrich doubled to lead off the frame and advanced to third on a groundout before being brought home on a suicide squeeze. Winthrop would tack on an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh to provide the final difference at 3-1.
After scoring in the fourth inning Wagner was doomed by their inability to get runners on base as only four Seahawks made it onto the base paths.
Mastrianni led the Wagner offensive-charge going 2-4 with two doubles and a RBI. Also collecting doubles were Sudol and junior Dan Morvay (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial). Senior Joseph DiGeronimo (Hawthorne, NJ / Hawthrone) rounded out the top-performers as he extended his season-opening hitting streak to 10 games.
Tisdale paced Winthrop going 2-3 with two doubles and two runs.
The Seahawks will next be in action on Tuesday, March 20 with a 4 pm game at Siena.
