Feb. 10, 2007

Stats

Providence, RI -- Wagner College women's water polo improved to 4-1 on the season after outlasting Harvard 10-9 earlier today in a game played at Brown University. The Seahawks were paced by junior Billy Hoelck (San Diego, CA/U. of San Diego HS) and sophomore Nicole Maichrowicz (Temple City, CA/Temple City) who combined for six goals in the victory.

The game began with Harvard striking first to put Wagner down 1-0 with 5:02 remaining in the first. The Green & White rebounded with scores by Maichrowciz and Hoelck to give Wagner their first lead at 2-1. Harvard put the hammer down over a four minute span that covered the end of the first and start of the second as the Crimson tallied three goals to build a 4-2 lead.

Wagner countered scoring two of the next three goals as senior captains Natasha Peterson (Whittier, CA/La Habra) and Stacey Travous (New Ulm, MN/Cumberland Valley) found the back of the net leaving the visiting Seahawks down 5-4 at the half. Travous also added a team high three drawn ejections.

The Seahawks came out of the halftime rejuvenated as they jumped all over their IVY league foe running off three straight goals as Stacey Travous and Hoelck put the ball into the cage to make the game 6-5 Wagner. Junior Amber McMichael (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin) took a feed from Lindsey Rodgers (Anaheim Hills, CA/Canyon) and fired the ball past the goalie to put Wagner up 7-5 for their largest lead of the game.

The fourth period proved to be a nail biter as Harvard fought back with three scores, but Wagner countered with three goals of their own, two by Hoelck and one by Maichrowicz to help outlast Harvard. Senior Katie Hauck (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) went the whole way in net for Wagner rebuking 10 Harvard shots for the win.

Wagner is next in action later this afternoon when they take on host team and top 20 ranked Brown at 5:45 pm.
