Staten Island, NY - Senior forward James Ulrich (Mt. Laurel, NJ/ Camden Catholic) poured in a season-high 23 points and senior guard Mark Porter (Atlantic City, NJ/ St. Augustine) dished out a career-high 13 assists to power Wagner past Maryland Eastern Shore 105-86.
With the victory, the Seahawks improved to 7-3 on the season and, in the process, provided head coach Mike Deane with the 400th victory of his 24-year coaching career. The 7-3 mark also matches the best 10-game start under Deane at Wagner. Now in his fifth season as Wagner head coach, Deane led the Seahawks to a 7-3 start in 2005-06.
Junior swingman Jamal Smith (Baltimore, MD/ Towson Catholic) scored all 16 of his points in the first half on 7-of-7 shooting, including a fall-away three-pointer at the buzzer as Wagner built a 55-38 halftime lead and cruised to the victory. Senior center Durell Vinson (Vineland, NJ/ St. Augustine) added 12 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. Sophomore center Michael Orock (Hoboken HS/ Hoboken, NJ) was one of five Seahawks in double-digits as he had a career-high 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting in just 14 minutes of action off the bench. Junior forward Llewchean Radford (Newport News, VA/ Heritage) added 11 points.
UMES guard Ed Tyson popped in 36 points to lead the Hawks, who fell to 2-10 on the season.
The game was tied 4-4 early when the Seahawks went on a 14-2 to run to build a commanding 18-6 lead and never looked back. Wagner shot a sizzling 69% from the field in the game-deciding first half.
The Seahawks are next in action on Sat., Dec. 22 when they travel across the continent to meet Loyola Marymount of California.
Tonight's victory marked the first time Wagner has eclipsed the 100-point mark since a 105-64 victory over Division III Union College (NY) 105-64 on Dec. 15, 2006. Prior to tonight, the last time the Seahawks hit the century mark vs. a Division I opponent was on March 1, 2004 in a 100-93 win over Sacred Heart.
