West Long Branch, NJ - The Wagner College Women's Soccer team dropped their first Northeast Conference game this afternoon, falling to the host Hawks of Monmouth University (6-2-3, 2-0-0 NEC) by a 2-0 score. The Seahawks move to a record of (3-7-1, 1-1-0 NEC) on the year.
Wagner had a tough time all day against the stifling Hawks, who kept them from getting off a shot attempt on the afternoon. Monmouth outshot the Seahawks 23-0.
With the game scoreless in the second half it was Monmouth sophomore Shannon Rogers who put her team on the board with a goal off a corner kick opportunity at 49:15.
Monmouth would get their second and final goal of the game after Seahawk junior defender Stephanie Burnett (Cocoa Beach, FL/Satellite) was carded for pulling down a Monmouth player in the box who was pursuing a cross. Hawk sophomore Alessandra DeTata executed on the following penalty kick, burying the ball in the right side of the net at 76:08.
Freshman goalkeeper Samantha Schueschner (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) played all 90 minutes in goal for the Seahawks. She finished with seven saves.
The Seahawks will look to bounce back this coming Saturday when they host NEC foe Long Island University of Brooklyn at Wagner College Stadium. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
