Emmitsburg, MD - The Wagner College Women's Soccer team won their opening Northeast Conference game this evening by edging the host Mountaineers (2-8-0, 0-1-0 NEC) of Mount St. Mary's University, 1-0. The Seahawks improve to a record of (3-6-1, 1-0-0 NEC) on the year.
With both teams deadlocked at zero through halftime, it was a "freshman connection" that finally untied the score.
In the 67th minute freshman midfielder Catherine Del Medico (Park Ridge, IL/Maine South) found fellow rookie midfielder Jessica Balling (Seaford, NY/MacArthur) for what would be the decisive goal sealing the Wagner victory.
It was Balling's team-leading second goal of the year.
Seahawks' freshman goalkeeper Samantha Schueschner (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) - along with an aggressive Wagner defense - secured the victory after the game-winning score to the Green & White a perfect start to the conference season.
Schueschner would finish with four saves.
It was her third shutout of the season.
The Seahawks look to keep the momentum going as they keep their show on the road for a Sunday morning breakfast match-up in two days against the Hawks of Monmouth University and the 2006 Player of the Year, sophomore Andrea Lopez. Game time is slated for 11 a.m.
