West Long Branch, NJ - Senior guard Jessie Collins (Crofton, MD / Arundel) went off for a career-high 26 points on 9-16 shooting, including a career-best six three pointers, but it wasn't enough as Wagner (1-13; 0-4) dropped their 11th-straight game 83-54 to Monmouth (9-5; 3-1 NEC) earlier tonight at Boylan Gym.
Monmouth scored the first nine points of the game and never looked back as they kept the Seahawks in check for most of the first half never allowing them to gain any momentum. The Hawks led 34-21 at the half in large part to a 14-5 advantage in points off turnovers.
In the second stanza, Monmouth put the Seahawks away as they hit on 48.3 percent of their shots, including 5-12 from behind the arc, while knocking down their first 16 free throws of the half. Collins would again lead the way in the second period, scoring 16 points, sparked by four three pointers, on her way to a game-high 26 points.
Senior Takesha Dye (Boynton Beach, FL / Daytona Beach CC) just missed out on her fifth double-double of the year with eight points and a game-high nine rebounds. Freshman Andrea Reed (Pocomoke City, MD / Pocomoke) had a game-high seven assists while junior Chelsey Bunyer (Shannon, IL / Eastland) and freshman John'a Poole (Middle River, MD / Eastern Tech) each added seven points to round out the top Wagner-performers.
For the game, the Green & White shot 35.0 percent (21-60) from the field and were 6-19 from three-point land while Monmouth shot at a 42.4-percent clip (28-66). Monmouth outrebounded the Seahawks 49-34 and the Hawk reserves outscored Wagner's by an astounding 48-12 margin.
Charisse Johnson led a balanced Monmouth-attack which saw six players score eight or more points with a team-best 15 points.
Wagner will now have a day off before heading to New Britain, CT to face CCSU on Wednesday at 7 pm.
