Emmitsburg, MD - Mount St. Mary's scored the final nine points of the game as Wagner fell by a final of 80-70 at Knott Arena this evening. The Seahawks went to 3-5 in the Northeast Conference and 6-13 overall with the defeat, while the Mount improved to 6-3 in the NEC and 7-13 overall.
Wagner fought back from an 18-point first half deficit behind the play of juniors Mark Porter (Atlantic City, NJ / St. Augustine's Prep) and James Ulrich (Mt. Laurel, NJ / Camden Catholic) who had 18 and 17 points respectively.
The Seahawks started off slow committing six turnovers in the first ten minutes hitting just 4 of 13 from the field. Falling behind by as many as 18 (31-13) with just under six minutes to go in the half, Wagner would then regroup closing the half by making six of their final eight shot to trail by only eight (39-31) following a 19 foot jumper by Porter in the closing seconds.
In the second half, Wagner used a 13-3 run to finally pulled back even on a lay-up by Justin Drummond (Baltimore, MD / McDonogh) with 7:42 left. Mount answered and moved back up by five less than a minute later. Later an inside basket by Ulrich brought Wagner back to within just one, at 71-70 with 1:45 left. Mychal Kearse then converted a Seahawk turnover into a three point play on the other end to start the 9-0 Mount surge to close out the game.
Sophomore Joey Mundweiler (Olathe, KS / Olathe East) was also in double figures with 10 points as Wagner ended the game shooting .549 from the floor. As a team they converted a steady 57.7 percent in the second half, but were outdone by a 61.5 percent effort from Mount St. Mary's.
The Mount ended the game shooting 55.9 percent and holding a 31-24 edge in rebounding. Gus Durr led the team with 18 points followed by Kearse with 17.
The Seahawks return home to host Saint Francis (PA) on Saturday at 7:00 pm.
