Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College Women's Soccer team lost another close 1-0 decision to St. Peter's College on a rainy afternoon at Wagner College Stadium in a non-conference match-up. They now move to a record of (0-8-0) on the season.
For much of the afternoon the two sides remained in a deadlock, with the scoreboard displaying zeroes for Wagner and St. Peter's respectively heading into the halftime intermission.
It wasn't until the 71st minute of the game that somebody finally struck when the Peahens' Kyle Marsh blasted an unassisted shot from a deep 30 yards out that beat Seahawk sophomore goalkeeper Leslie Reed (Indian Harbour Beach, FL/Satellite) on the top shelf.
Wagner wouldn't go down without a fight, however. Soon after Marsh's goal the Seahawks put together a frantic, frenetic rally that was partially responsible for the way they dominated the shots on goal category, 23-7. In the second half the Seahawks took 11 shots to the Peahen's total of only three.
Perhaps Wagner's best opportunity came with seven minutes left when junior forward Danielle Telleria (Orlando, FL/Winter Springs) booted a corner kick into the fray of players in front of the Peahens' goal where freshman midfielder Danielle Sheehan (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) headed what looked to be a winner. It took a miraculous save by St. Peter's goalkeeper Jilian Fueshko where she stuck a flailing left hand out and somehow denied Sheehan's bid to tie up the game.
The Peahens' would weather the furious storm put on by the Seahawks and go onto to take the victory despite trailing significantly in the battle of the corner kicks (8-3) as well as the aforementioned shots on goal.
As for Wagner's goalkeeping, sophomore Leslie Reed (Indian Harbour Beach, FL/Satellite) spelled senior Ashley Wilson (Secane, PA/Upper Darby) - who recorded three saves on the day - at the beginning of the second half.
The Seahawks next game is this Friday when they go on the road to face Long Island University in Brooklyn at 6 p.m.
