WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ - The Wagner College women's tennis team fell 6-1 at Monmouth in their season opener while the Hawks improved to 2-0.
At one singles, sophomore Brittany Frazza (West Caldwell, NJ / Morris Catholic) was spectacular in her season-opener defeating Sarah Ragan 7-5 and 6-1. The first set was hard-fought as the two were tied at 5-5 before Frazza took the next two games to take the game 7-5. In the second game, Frazza fell behind 0-1 before storming back to win the next six games to go on to win 6-1. She also combined with junior Marie Crane (Cheshire, CT / Cheshire) in winning first doubles over Ashleigh Johnson and Kaitlin Gallagher by an 8-2 count.
However that would be the lone point for Wagner. Junior Aarti Mahtani (Montego Bay, Jamaica / Saint Andrews's) lost at No. 2 singles to Johnson in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. In third singles, classmate Pooja Patel (East Greenwich, RI / East Greenwich) lost 6-2, 6-3 to Gallagher. Crane dropped her match to Laura Giuliari at No. 4 by a 6-0, 6-1 score. At five singles, freshman Valerie LeCureux (Jamison, PA / Central Bucks East) lost by identical 6-1 counts to Krista McCormick. Rounding out the singles action, sophomore Emily Boyd (Stratham, NH / Exeter Area) lost 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 to Ashley Fornaro.
Despite Wagner's win at first doubles, Monmouth captured the other two matches for the doubles' point. At second doubles, Ragan and McCormick felled Mahtani and Patel 8-1 and LeCureux and Boyd lost to Kristen Hoffman and Giuliari by the same 8-1 score.
The Seahawks are right back in action on Saturday, September 23 at 12 pm when they head to Delaware State.
