Riverdale, NY - The Wagner College Women's Soccer team lost a close 2-1 game to Manhattan College this afternoon on a water-logged Gaelic Park field in a non-conference match-up. They now move to a record of (0-7-0) on the season.
For the first time this season the Seahawks were the ones to draw first blood when freshman midfielder Danielle Sheehan (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) notched her second goal of the year - which is a team-high thus far for Wagner - when she scored unassisted on a breakaway with a finesse flick over the Jaspers' goalkeeper's head with 16:35 gone by in the contest.
Manhattan's senior co-captain Kathleen Kuntz would be the proverbial thorn in the Seahawks' side the entire contest, however. She would prove this first by connecting on a cross from deep in the corner for a score in the 41st minute to knot the count up at 1 apiece.
Almost two minutes later Kuntz would score again off a corner kick giving the Jaspers the lead right before the halftime intermission.
After the break and throughout the rest of the game the Seahawks would have a tough time taking control of the game from the home team. The Jaspers dominated the offensive attack by out-dueling Wagner in shots attempted 27-6.
Despite this the Seahawks very nearly tied up the match when yet another breakaway opened up for Danielle Sheehan. This time, however, she was denied by the Manhattan goalkeeper Alicia DeFino who came up with the save.
In goal for Wagner saw this season's debut of sophomore Leslie Reed (Indian Harbour Beach, FL/Satellite) who is finally back after rehabbing from back surgery over the summer. She racked up an impressive 10 saves on the afternoon.
The Seahawks next game is this Sunday when they return to Grymes Hill to take on the Peacocks of St. Peter's at 1 p.m.
