Final Stats
Poughkeepsie, NY - - The Seahawks outscored Marist 28-0 in the second half behind the strength of the running game to come out with a convincing 38-7 win over host Marist earlier this evening on Leonindoff Field. The Seahawks now improve to 3-0 as Marist falls to 1-2.
Sophomore RB Aliga Betts (Pembroke Pines, FL / Cooper City) ran the ball 22 times for 92 yards and 1 touchdown, while teammate Jason Butler (Syracuse, NY / Henninger) accounted for 130 all purpose and 80 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries.
Wagner trailed 7-3 in the late stages of the first half, before Butler's 50 yard screen pass set up a two yard scoring pass from sophomore QB Matt Abbey (La Canada, CA / St. Francis) to junior TE Joe Kinard (Kingston, NY / Kingston). Abbey ended his night with 187 yards on 15 of 26 through the air, while Kinard, making his first start of the year due to injury, had four catches for 46 yards. The Seahawks then pounded out 151 yards and four touchdowns on the ground in the second half to outscore the Red Foxes 28-0 in the win.
Butler was a large part of the second half running game posting 77 of his yards on 11 carries. He scored on Wagner's first second half possession completing a nine play 65 yard drive with an 11 yard scamper. Marist then drove the field before a bruising hit by sophomore Adrian Adderley (Caver Ranches, FL / MSGR Place) forced the ball loose from Frankie Farrington inside the Wagner 10 yard line.
Betts then got in the action at the start of the fourth quarter with a 22 yard touchdown run following a six play 57 yard drive by Wagner. With the Seahawks up comfortably 24-7, junior DB Al Phillips (Hialeah, FL / American) stopped the next Red Fox drive with an interception, his second of the year.
Betts then kept the running game going accounting for 31 yards on a 16 play, 69 yard drive before giving way to Butler who scored from seven yards out. Senior RB Warren Barnett (Springfield, MA / Springfield Central) then topped of the scoring with a two yard TD plunge that was set up by a blocked punt in the waning stages for the game.
In the first half junior Piotr Czech (Keyport, NY / Keyport) started the scoring converting on a 27 yard field goal attempt on Wagner's second possession of the game. Senior Thomas Larsen (Brooklyn, NY/Fort Hamilton) gave the Seahawks the ball after recovering a fumble forced by sophomore Kevin Maroney (Bethesda, MD / St. John's College HS).
The score remained there until Marist broke through in the middle of the first quarter on an eight yard pass from Steven McGrath to Keith Mitchell.
Wagner limited Marist to 232 total yards and just 62 on the ground. The Red Foxes were playing without injured RB Obozua Ehikioya who totaled 145 yards in Marist's win over Wagner last season. Sophomore LB Jeremy Spinks (Tampa, FL / Chamberlain led the Seahawks with eight tackles and two pass breakups.
The Seahawks return to action next Saturday at home when they host Saint Peter's at 1:00 pm.
