Game Two Box

West Long Branch, NJ - The Wagner Seahawks remained undefeated in the Northeast Conference with a sweep of host Monmouth 2-1 and 8-0 earlier today. Wagner, the lone undefeated team in the league, improved to 4-0 NEC and 18-12 on the year. Monmouth fell to 1-3 in the NEC and 11-16 overall.

Sophomore Victoria Batistelli (Huntington Beach, CA / Huntington Beach) scored the go ahead run in the sixth inning of game one, then added a grand slam with two runs scored in the game two rout. Junior Dara Gadziala (Edison, NJ / Edison) was brilliant on the mound allowing just one hit, a leadoff double in the fifth, and facing the minimum 21 batters for the shutout in the nightcap.

In the opening the contest, Wagner opened the scoring in the top of the second as senior Joy Gallagher (Hazleton, Pa / Hazleton) and sophomore Ami Iwicki (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) connected for back-to-back doubles to take an early 1-0 lead. The Hawks pushed a run across the board in the bottom of the third as freshman Lee Simonetti (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) was able to score on a fielder's choice off the bat of Heather Gordon (Hatboro, Pa./Mount St. Joseph) to tie the game at 1-1.

The Seahawks were able to push across the decisive run in the top of the sixth as Batistelli scored from second off a hit from Iwicki and a Monmouth error to take the lead 2-1. The Hawks were unable to muster a rally as junior Morgan Miller (Las Vegas, NV / Silverado) stranded nine Monmouth runners on base for the game.

Miller (11-5) allowed just five hits in the game, surrendering just the one run, unearned. Kristin Sawsville took the loss for Monmouth.

Junior Christina Hopkins (Edison, NJ / Edison) and Iwicki each had two hits in the game.

In the second game of the day, Wagner's offense exploded as three consecutive singles in the top of the third loaded the bases for Batistelli, who launched a grand slam over the centerfield wall to take a 4-0 advantage. The Seahawks added two more in the fifth on RBI single from freshman Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ / Paramus Catholic) and Iwicki as the visitors led 6-0.

The lead grew to 8-0 in the top half of the seventh as freshman Andrea Lazzari (Reno, NV / Wooster) singled and eventually scored on an error and Batistelli came home on a RBI hit from Gallagher.

Gadziala won her seventh straight decison with the game two gem

Eight runs was way more than enough for Gadziala, who stifled the Blue and White offense allowing only one base runner all game and facing the minimum 21 batters. She improves to 7-2 on the year winning her seventh straight decision with her third career shutout. The third year hurler retired the first 12 batters before a leadoff double in the fifth.

Hopkins had another three hits for Wagner, while Lazzari, Batistelli and Iwicki pounded out two each in the 13 hit barrage.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Monday as they travel to Brooklyn, NY for a make double header vs LIU.
