Poughkeepsie, NY -- The Wagner College women's water polo team fell to the Marist College Red Foxes 5-4 in the MAAC Championship game earlier today. With the loss Wagner's season comes to an abrupt end at 25-14 while the Red Foxes move onto the NCAA Tournament field of eight.
It was a tightly contest game throughout. Marist went up early 1-0 but the Seahawks answered with a goal by Stacey Travous (New Ulm, MN/Cumberland Valley) to tie the game at one with 3:34 to go in the first. Marist would add another score later in the period to lead after one, 2-1. The second period only saw one goal as senior Courtney Crase (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) found the back of the net tying the game two. That was the score at halftime as well.
Crase, playing in what would be her last game tallied a goal late in the third to give Wagner their only lead of the game at 3-2. Marist would come with two straight goals to close the third period and open the fourth
to take a 4-3 lead.
At the 4:02 mark in the fourth junior Anne Wolkenhauer (Fullerton, CA/Fullerton Union) took a feed from senior Sara Kramer (Carlisle, PA/Cumberland Valley) retying the score at four. Marist would answer as they did all game with a score at the 1:43 mark to build a one goal lead at 5-4. Wagner would have a last chance with under 30 seconds to score but would be unable to convert as time wound down.
Katie Hauck (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) played admirably in net turning away 10 Marist shots. Also of note was Stacey Travous joining Kramer and Crase on the All-MAAC Tournament team. Also this game marked the final in a stellar career for both Crase and Kramer who together combined for over 300 goals in their four year careers.
