New Rochelle, NY -- The Wagner College Seahawks water polo team was stunned earlier today by the Iona Gaels losing 7-6 in MAAC action. The loss brings an end to Wagner's eight game winning streak as well as a conference winning streak that stretched back to the 2004 campaign. With the loss the Seahawks fall to 23-13 and 8-1 in conference.
It was a back and forth contest that saw Wagner go up early 2-0 in the first. Iona rallied with three unanswered scores and after the first period led by a count of 4-2. The Seahawks chipped away at the Iona lead with a goal in the second to cut the deficit to just a goal, and trailed 4-3 at the half. The Green & White appeared to get things in gear with a mini two goal run to take their second lead of the game at 5-4 in the third quarter. Iona proved their resiliency with another score and the contest was knotted at five after three.
The game moved to the fourth quarter where the battle would again be tied this time at six. Iona came through in the clutch with a tally at the 1:30 mark in the fourth to regain the advantage at 7-6. The Seahawks had a last chance opportunity with under 30 seconds remaining but were unable to convert.
