Final Stats
West Long Branch, NJ - Wagner senior Heather George (W. Allenhurst, NJ / Ocean Twp.) scored six goals to break her own single season school record as the Seahawks were defeated 20-14 at Monmouth. George, now with 58 goals on the year, surpassed the 56 scores she made in 2004.
Wagner (4-12; 2-5 NEC) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, after unassisted goals from freshman Jessica Richmond (Jenkintown, PA / Jenkintown), George and junior Jessica Ellis (Fairport, NY / Fairport) in the first three minutes. Monmouth (10-6; 7-0 NEC), which clinched a share of the Northeast Conference title with the win, answered with a 4-0 run to take their first lead of the game with 19:38 remaining in the first half. Wagner evened the match at 4-4 with another goal by George 10 seconds later setting off a second 3-0 run. Freshman Kelly Blundin (Plymouth Meeting, PA / Whitemarsh) and George each added free position goals as Seahawks staked a 6-4 lead.
The Blue and White rattled off five consecutive goals to take a 9-6 lead which they would never relinquish. The Seahawks did hang tough with two more first half goals as they trailed 9-8 at intermission.
Monmouth appeared to put the game away, putting four straight into the back of the net to start the second stanza, but Wagner kept fighting. Ellis started a 5-1 stretch over the next eight minutes off an assist from Blundin. The run left Wagner doen by one (14-13), but the Hawks eventually sealed the win with four unanswered.
Senior Darby Biggart (Crownsville, MD / Arch. Spalding), who also scored a goal, led the team with seven ground balls and had four draw controls. Wagner was out shot 42-38, but led 20-16 in draw controls. Freshman goalie Amy Jones (N. Harford, MD / N. Harford) stopped 15 shots in goal.
Wagner ends the season at LIU on Sunday.
