TEANECK, NJ - The Wagner College Seahawks broke out the broom earlier today sweeping their three-game set from Fairleigh Dickinson with an 8-7 victory at the FDU Field. With the win Wagner stays undefeated in conference play at 3-0 while moving to 4-17 overall and the Knights fall to 3-18 and 1-5 in the NEC. Junior Joseph DiGeronimo (Hawthorne, NJ / Hawthorne) continued his torrid hitting as he recorded his ninth multi-hit game of the year and extended his hitting streak to six, going 3-5 at the plate with two RBI, helping propel the Seahawks to their third-straight win.
Junior Ed Sudol (Wallington, NJ / Wallington) got things rolling for Wagner in the first when he singled up the middle driving in DiGeronimo, who led off with a single before stealing second. With two outs sophomore Dan Morvay (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) singled to right center advancing Sudol to third. Junior Pat Rogers (Middletown, NJ / St. John's) then singled up the middle driving in Sudol and moving Morvay to second. Senior Mike Picarello (Clifton, NJ / Clifton) then provided the crushing blow in the inning doubling down the left field line, plating Morvay and Rogers to make it 4-0 Seahawks.
The Knights clawed back with single runs in the bottom of the first and the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-2. Senior Nick Papa (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) got one of the runs back in the top of the fifth, scoring on a dropped fly ball. In the bottom of the fifth, FDU scored two runs to make it 5-4 while chasing Seahawk starter freshman Andrew Huebner (Hatfield, PA / North Penn).
The Seahawks got some more breathing room in the top of the sixth when DiGeronimo singled with the bases loaded, driving in Picarello. FDU got one of the runs back in the bottom part of the sixth, making it 6-5.
In the top of the eighth, the Seahawks plated two huge insurance-runs, making it 8-5 heading into the bottom of the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth, FDU cut the deficit to 8-6 with a sacrifice fly before the Seahawks brought in game-one winner junior rhp Dan Lanzano (E. Brusnwick, NJ / E. Brunswick) to close out the game. After a fielding error and a base-hit made it 8-7 and put the tying run 90 feet from home Lanzano struck out the next two batters to quell the threat.
In the bottom of the ninth it was more Lanzano, as he turned off the lights on FDU retiring the side in order on the strength of two more strikeouts while picking up his first career save and keeping Wagner in a first-place tie in the NEC with Monmouth (6-0 NEC).
Sophomore rhp Thomas Weston (Fair Haven, NJ / Rumson) picked up his first win of the year against two losses, giving up just two earned runs in 3.0 innings of relief. Huebner started the game and struck out six in 4.1 innings while yielding four runs, three earned.
Rogers, like DiGeronimo, had three hits on the day to help lead the Seahawks offense, which scored their eight runs on 11 hits.
DiGeronimo owned FDU pitching in the series going went 8-13 with eight RBI.
