Wagner Starts Off NEC Play with 6-4 / 4-1 Wins over CCSU

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner Seahawks got off to a strong start in Northeast Conference play with 6-4 and 4-1 wins over visiting Central Connecticut St. today. The sweep improves Wagner to 16-12 overall and 2-0 in the NEC. The Seahawks would manage just eight hits on the day, but junior Dara Gadziala (E. Brunswick, NJ / E. Brunswick) limited the opposition to just one run in nine innings of work.

Wagner jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first game scoring once in the second then adding five more in the third. Freshman Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ / Paramus Catholic) accounted for the Seahawks run in the second scoring on a passed ball after reaching on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning.

In the third, the Wagner batters drew three walks and a hit by pitch, while scored the five runs on just three hits. Sophomore Ami Iwicki (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) had the big hit with a two run single into center, while senior Christy Sykora (Orland Park, IL / Carl Sandburg) and sophomore Victoria Batistelli (Hunington Beach, CA / Huntington Beach) each added run scoring singles as well.

The Blue Devils (1-21; 0-4 NEC) would strike in the fourth scoring three two out runs, including a two run double from Kristin Kropp. Pam Shifrin then made it 6-4 in the fifth with a long home run just inside the left field foul pole, her second of the season.

Gadziala would take over on the mound for Seahawks starter Morgan Miller (Las Vegas, NV / Silverado) to start the sixth inning. She allowed just one hit in the final two innings to pick up her first career save. Miller improved to 10-5 on the year with the win. Brittany Salvatore (1-5) took the loss for CCSU.

Junior Christina Hopkins (Edison, NJ / Edison) accounted for the other Wagner hit on a single in the fifth. Hopkins also drew a pair of walks scoring once and recording a RBI.

Central got on top again in game two on a solo home run from Alison Rossi in the second, her first of the year. Senior Joy Gallagher (Hazleton, PA / Hazleton) would answer back in the last of the third with her second dinger of the year, a solo shot into right to tie the score.

After freshman Andrea Lazzari (Reno, NV / Wooster) pulled a double down the left field line to start the bottom of the fourth, Batistelli belted an opposite field home run over the fence in right. The two run shot was her third of the season. Vanore was then hit by a pitch and would score as Sykora reached safely on an error to give Wagner a 4-1 advantage.

Gadziala picked up where she left off in game one with the complete game. The third year hurler won her sixth straight decision, improving to 6-2, while scattering eight hits with four strikeouts. Kate Warrington (0-8) was on the losing end for the Blue Devils

Wagner takes to the field again next weekend with league doubleheaders at LIU on Saturday and at Monmouth on Sunday. ~ wagnerathletics.com ~
