Final Stats
Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College men's lacrosse team were defeated today at Wagner College Stadium, falling to Saint Joseph's, 11-3. The Green & White now stand at 0-5 in the MAAC and 0-12 overall on the year.
Wagner had to play catch-up right from the start as the Hawks netted the first six goals before halftime leaving it at 6-0, in their advantage, going into the break.
It wasn't until 13:09 left in the third quarter that junior midfielder Ryan Pepe (Andover, NJ/Pope John XXIII) found the back of the net for the Green & White making it 6-1, Saint Joseph's lead. Almost two minutes later another Wagner score came, this time, from senior midfielder Tom Marchetti (Washington, DC/Gonzaga) cutting into the Hawk-lead a little deeper at 6-2.
Unfortunately for Wagner that would be the closest they would get from then on as the Hawks poured on another five unanswered goals the rest of the way including 2 in that stretch from their attack Steve Varga. He led all players on the day with 4 goals in the game.
In the face-off department, sophomore midfielder Mike Hess (Potomac, MD/The Heights School) - for the second straight game - dominated most any opponent who challenged him besting Saint Joseph's 13 out of the 17 times there was a battle at midfield.
Senior goalkeeper Chris Sochaki (Brant Beach, NJ/Shawnee) saved a remarkable 20 shots for the Seahawks in the game, playing all but 4 minutes in the contest.
The Seahawks' next contest is this Sunday, April 23, when they play at Virginia Military Institute in a MAAC Conference match-up at noon.
