Men's Tennis Snaps Five-Match Losing Streak With 5-2 Win Over SFNY

FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY - The Seahawks snapped their five-match losing streak with a 5-2 victory over St. Francis (NY) at the National Tennis Center yesterday. With the win the Green & White improve to 3-12 overall 2-6 in the NEC.

Sophomore Adam Amster (Concord, MA / Concord-Carlisle) was on his way to an easy victory at No. 2 singles after winning the first set 6-2 and leading in the second set 5-2 when his opponent retired due to injury. Senior Brandon Sogluizzo (Staten Island, NY / Curtis) dominated his opponent at No. 3 singles, capturing the point 6-0, 6-0. Graduate student Scott Chamberlin (Torrington, CT / Torrington / Western New England) also had little trouble winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. At the five spot, sophomore Will Shuler (Springfield, MA / Central Springfield) won a tough match 7-5, 6-2. Senior Steve Johnsen (Staten Island, NY / Tottenville) lost to 2005 All-NEC selection Arthur Velnik 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles

In doubles action Johnsen and Amster pulled out a tough 9-8 victory in a tiebreaker at No. 1. In No. 2 doubles, Chamberlin and Sogluizzo were dominant in an 8-0 win.

The two teams meet again in the first round of the NEC Touranment on Friday, April 21 at 9 am in Mercer County, NJ.
