Final Stats
New Britain, CT - Central Connecticut St scored a goal with nine seconds left to take a 10-9 victory from the visiting Seahawks of Wagner College this afternoon.
In a back and forth game that saw seven ties and five lead changes, the Seahawks (4-10; 2-4 (NEC) took a 9-8 lead with 9:29 left on consecutive goals from freshman Cara Gonzalez (Syracuse, NY / Westhill). The Blue Devils (3-9; 3-4 NEC) then tied the score 30 seconds later setting up the game winner in the closing seconds. After the tying score neither goalkeeper relented until Abbey Capobianco netted the game-winner on a one-on-one effort that started with just under 30 seconds remaining in the game.
Gonzalez totaled three goals, all in the second half, while senior Heather George (W. Allenhurst, NJ / Ocean Twp.) scored three goals of her own in the first half.
CCSU jumped out first with a score 19 seconds into play, putting the Blue Devils on the board first. The two squads traded goals over the proceeding 7:40; George started a 3-0 Wagner run that gave the visitors a 4-2 advantage at the 17:39 mark.
The Blue Devils would tie the score before the half with scores at 15:51 and 6:22 for a 4-4 ballgame.
The Wagner drought continued to start the second stanza as two straight goals put CCSU up 6-4 with 27:35 left. Senior Jessica Ellis (Fairport, NY / Fairport) would join the mix for Wagner sandwiching a pair of goals around a Gonzalez score in the next four minutes. The three straight net finders gave Wagner a 7-6 lead which would hold up until back to back goals by Capobianco gave CCSU an 8-7 lead at the 15:18 minute mark.
Gonzalez scored 10 seconds later to tie the game, setting up the final exchange.
Capobianco led all scorers with four goals, while Amanda Zabel made 14 saves in goal for the Blue Devils.
For Wagner, senior Nicole Cipollone (Swathmore, PA / Ridley) led the team with six ground balls as the team held a 34-28 advantage. The Seahawks won 12 of 21 draw controls.
Wagner returns to action on Tuesday as they travel to Stony Brook for a non-league game at 7:00 pm.
