LIU Takes Two From Wagner

Brooklyn, NY - The Seahawks lost a pair of games at LIU by scores of 2-1 and 14-6 earlier today. Wagner slips to 4-2 in the league and 18-14 on the season with the losses will the Blackbirds went to 5-1 NEC and 18-16 overall.

The Seahawks lost a tough one in game one as the Blackbirds pushed across the winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore Victoria Batistelli (Huntington Beach, CA / Huntington Beach) gave Wagner a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a two out RBI single that scored junior Christina Hopkins (Edison, NJ / Edison).

LIU would even the score in the third with two out back to back doubles into the left field corner. The score would stay there until the decisive seventh inning. A lead off walk and a sacrifice put the winning run on second with one out. An infield single and another walk would load the bases for Alison Winslow who dropped the game winning hit into left.

Wagner would strand five runners in the game, all in the first three innings. Junior Morgan Miller (Las Vegas, NV / Silverado) was charged with the loss falling to 11-6 on the year. She allowed seven hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work.

Batistelli and sophomore Katie Stevens (Reno, NV / Wooster) each had two hits in the game for Wagner.

In the night cap the Seahawks jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the top of the third. Senior Joy Gallagher (Hazleton, PA / Hazleton) belted a two run homer in the second and in the third a solo home run by freshman Andrea Lazzari (Reno, NV / Wooster) followed by a RBI single from Gallagher put Wagner up.

LIU would then even the score with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth. The big inning came in the fifth as the Blackbirds blasted three home runs and scored six times for a 10-4.

The Seahawks would score twice in the sixth as sophomore Ami Iwicki (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) drove in a run and freshman Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ / Paramus Catholic) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Wagner out hit LIU 14-12, but would leave 11 runners on base, including five in the final two innings.

The Blackbirds put the game away in the four runs in the sixth to put the mercy rule into effect. LIU would hit five home runs in the game, including two by Brittany Edwards who drove in five.

Junior Dara Gadziala (Edison, NJ / Edison) who was named NEC Pitcher of the Week earlier in the day was charged with the loss ending her seven game winning streak.

Iwicki had three hits in the games, followed by Stevens, Vanore, Gallagher and senior Christy Sykora (Orland Park, IL / Carl Sandburg) with two each.

Wagner travels to Lafayette for a non-league DH on Tuesday.
