EASTON, PA - Wagner saw their losing-streak hit six games following a 12-4 setback at Lafayette earlier today at the Class of '78 Stadium. With the loss the Seahawks fall to 1-17 while the Leopards improve to 8-11.
Lafayette struck first in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly to take an early 1-0 lead before adding two more in the bottom of the second on a two-run home run by Chris Luick to go up 3-0. Wagner then dented the scoreboard in the top of the third as sophomore Joe Testa (Brick, NJ / Brick) scored on an Ed Sudol (Jr., Wallington, NJ / Wallington) ground out, making it 3-1. That was the closest the Seahawks would come the rest of the day as Lafayette batted around in the bottom part of the inning, scoring six runs to go up 9-1.
With Wagner down 12-1 in the top of the eighth the Seahawks had a mini-rally scoring three runs on two hits and four walks.
Junior Joseph DiGeronimo (Hawthorne, NJ / Hawthorne) led the Seahawks on the day going 2-4 with a double, three stolen bases and a run scored. Senior Nick Papa (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) was 2-5 at the plate with a double and a run scored, rounding out the top offensive-performers for the Green & White.
Also recording singles for the Seahawks were freshman Chris Drechsel (Cranford, NJ / Cranford), junior Pat Rogers (Middletown, NJ / St. John's) and senior Brian Scrocca (Somerville, NJ / Somerville).
Freshman rhp Kevin Rush (Metuchen, NJ / Metuchen) started and took the loss for the Seahawks and is now 0-1 on the season. Junior Dan Lanzano (E. Brunswick, NJ / E. Brunswick) continued his fine pitching of late yielding just one unearned run and striking out two in 2.0 innings of relief.
The Leopards were led by Luick, who went 2-3 with two runs, three RBI and a home run while Steve Roberts went 2.0 scoreless innings to improve to 2-2 on the season.
Wagner now begins their "second" season when they open up Northeast Conference (NEC) play at Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, April 1 with a doubleheader starting at 12 pm.
