STATEN ISLAND, NY - Facing one of the top teams in the Big East the Wagner College Seahawks dropped their fifth straight game, losing to St. John's 7-1 earlier this afternoon at Dr. Bill Willetts Field. The loss drops Wagner to 1-16 while the Red Storm are now 15-7.
The Red Storm got going immediately from the onset with a lead-off double, followed by a bunt hit before an RBI double made it 1-0 and put runners on second and third with no one out. However, from that point on senior rhp Mike D'Angelis (Paramus, NJ / St. Joseph's Regional) buckled down and retired the next eight batters in a row before Chris Joachim singled with two outs in the top of the third. Anthony Smith then followed with the first of his two two-run home runs on the day to make it 3-0.
Wagner would get one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning as Joe Testa (Brick, NJ / Brick) scored on a RBI groundout by senior Nick Papa (Freehold, NJ / Freehold).
The Red Storm would tack on three more runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by Smith's second two-run homer of the day, before adding a run in the top of the eighth to make it 7-1 and round out the scoring.
The Seahawks matched the Red Storm with 10 hits, but left 10 men on base.
Testa and freshman Andrew Huebner (Hatfield, PA / North Penn) each recorded career-highs in hits going 2-5 and 2-4 at the plate, respectively. Junior Joseph DiGeronimo (Hawthorne, NJ / Hawthorne) went 2-5 with a double and senior Mike Picarello (Clifton, NJ / Clifton) was 2-4, rounding out the four Seahawks with multi-hits on the day. Junior Ed Sudol (Wallington, NJ / Wallington) also extended his hit streak to seven games with a single.
D'Angelis fell to 0-5 on the season, striking out two and giving up three runs in 3.0 innings of work.
Jared Yecker struck out five and gave up just a single run in 5.0 innings in moving to 4-0 on the year.
Wagner hits the road tomorrow, March 30 for a single-game at Lafayette starting at 3 pm.
