Wagner's Bats Silenced In 10-0 Loss At #28 Winthrop

March 17, 2006

Box Score

ROCK HILL, SC - The Wagner College Seahawks' (0-9) bats were silenced earlier today in Rock Hill, SC as they could only muster three hits in losing 10-0 against the #28 Winthrop Eagles (16-5) in the Coca Cola Classic at the Winthrop Ballpark.

Winthrop's Josh McDonald turned in a dominating outing, striking out a career-best 11 while retiring 12 in a row at one point and allowing just two hits and two walks in 8.0 dominating innings.

The Eagles' jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run blast by Jacob Dempsey and would not look back as they added three in the third, one in the fourth and four in the seventh to win going away 10-0.

Junior shortstop Joseph DiGeronimo (Hawthorne, NJ / Hawthorne) led off the game for the Seahawks with a single through the right side, but was stranded at second base. Wagner threatened again in the top of the fifth when freshman first baseman Mike Maffucci (Nutley, NJ / Nutley) and junior third baseman Pat Rogers (Middletown, NJ / St. John's) each walked giving the Seahawks a first and second one out situation. However McDonald forced the next two batters into a pop-out and a strikeout, respectively, to extinguish the threat.

Rogers would add a hit in the eighth inning and junior Mike Dubitsky (Westfield, NJ / Westfield) had a pinch-hit single in the top of the ninth to round out the Wagner baserunners.

Sophomore lhp Joe Testa (Brick, NJ / Brick) fell to 0-3 on the season, striking out two and yielding six runs over 6.0 innings.

The Green & White continue action in the Coca Cola Classic tomorrow, March 18 at 4:30 pm when they take on George Washington out of the Atlantic 10.
