Feb. 9, 2006

Box Score

Brooklyn, NY - The Wagner College Seahawks committed a season high 27 turnovers in a 57-49 loss at host St. Francis (NY) earlier tonight.

With both teams misfiring from the floor early, Wagner (10-11, 3-9 NEC), stake a 4-0 advantage five minutes into the game. Sean Dantzler, a 5.6 points per game scorer, led set off a 14-0 run by St. Francis (7-14, 4-8 NEC) hitting four three pointers over the next four minutes. During the first 9:30 of play the Seahawks coughed up 12 turnovers, while shooting just 1-5 from the floor.

The Seahawks would climb back in with six unanswered in the next four minutes as they trailed 14-10 with seven minutes to go in the half. That would be as close as Wagner would get the rest of the game as the Terriers went on an 8-1 stretch for a comfortable 11 point margin which would stand at 26-11 at the half.

The second half remained as sloppy as the first but the Seahawks trailed by just nine, 39-30 with 8:19 to play following a Joey Mundweiler lay-in. The Terriers would then put the game away with a 10-3 spurt over the next six minutes in which Wagner shot 1-4 from the field and turned the ball over three times.

Sophomore guard Mark Porter (Atlantic, City, NJ / St. Augustine's Prep) who knocked in a career high 25 points, led a final Seahawk charge with 14 points in the final 2:25, but the deficit never reached less than six (55-49) as the Green and White went on to their fifth straight loss and sixth straight on the road.

Playing without senior captain DeEarnest McLemore (Cary, NC / Cary) who leads the NEC in assists (5.1 apg) and assist:turnover ratio (2.30:1), the Seahawks appeared out of sink on offense with 20 first half turnovers and a 36.6 percent field goal percentage. Sophomore James Ulrich (Mt. Laurel, NJ / Camden Catholic), had nine points and seven rebounds, while Mundweiler chipped in eight off the bench.

Wagner held the Terriers to 32.0 percent shooting and won the rebounding battle 38-31. Dantzler ended the night with 17 points and five three pointers, while teammates Christian Brown and John Gooden each had 10 points.

The Seahawks will return to action on Monday for a 7:00 pm contest at Monmouth in West Long Branch, NJ.
