Monmouth Races Past Wagner 77-44

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ - The Wagner College Seahawks saw their losing streak hit eight games as they fell on the road to the red-hot Monmouth Hawks by a score of 77-44 earlier today at Boylan Gymnasium. For Monmouth, it was their eighth win in their last 10 games as they improve to 11-9 and 8-3 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while Wagner falls to 1-18 and 1-9 in the NEC.

Sophomore guard Chelsey Bunyer (Shannon, IL / Eastland) led the Seahawks with a game-high 16 points, including 12 in the second half, despite being saddled with four fouls for most of the second stanza. Senior guard Joy Gallagher (Hazleton, PA / Hazleton) rounded out the Wagner double-figure scorers with 10 points.

With the scored tied at 7-7 with 15:52 remaining in the first half, Monmouth blew the game wide-open with a back-breaking 37-9 run over the next 16:52, including a 17-0 spurt that spanned the final 4:29 of the first half and the first 1:00 of the second stanza.

In the decisive first half, the Hawks shot 46.7 percent (14-30) while holding the Seahawks to just 25.9 percent shooting (7-27) and forcing 17 Wagner turnovers.

For the game, Monmouth shot 46.0 percent (29-63) as they continued to pour it on in the second stanza, outscoring the Seahawks 37-28. Wagner shot 32.7 percent (18-55) for the game and was outrebounded 46-33.

Veronica Randolph (12 points) and LaKia Barber (12 points) paced four double-digit scorers for the Hawks.

The Seahawks return home Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 7 pm when they welcome Fairleigh Dickinson to the Spiro Sports Center.

NOTES: With her 10 points, Gallagher now has 1,039 points and is seven away from current SFNY coach Brenda Milano for 19th place on the all-time Seahawks scoring list ... The 16 first-half points are the lowest in a stanza for the Green & White this year ... The Seahawks have now lost 14 straight road games and seven straight to Monmouth.
