Feb. 25, 2006

Box Score

HAMDEN, CT - The Wagner College Seahawks dropped their season-opener 13-3 at Quinnipiac earlier today in Hamden, CT.

Quinnipiac outshot the Seahawks by a count of 50-19 and won the battle of the ground balls 43-33.

Senior midfielder Tom Marchetti (Washington, DC / Gonzaga), freshman attacker Jeff Policicchio (Novi, MI / Novi) and junior attacker Taylor Poschmann (Cold Spring Harbor, NY / Cold Spring Harbor) led the Seahawk attack with one goal apiece. Junior midfielder Mike Coleman (Rainbow Lakes, NY / Boonton) chipped in with two assists for the Seahawks.

After spotting the Bobcats three early goals, the Seahawks broke into the scoring column as Policicchio scored off a nifty pass from Coleman to make the score 3-1 with 4:29 to go in the first half. Also on the play, Quinnipiac was called for two penalties making the play that much more impressive. Playing with a two-man advantage on the ensuing possession as a result of the penalties, Wagner squandered a few scoring chances and would never get closer as the Bobcats scored nine straight goals.

Down 12-1 in the third period, Poschmann scored the Seahawks' second goal off a pass from Coleman with 12:01 remaining in the final period. Marchetti tacked on the Seahawks third and final goal of the game at the 5:13 mark.

Senior goalie Chris Sochacki (Brant Beach, NJ / Shawnee) had 15 saves for the Green & White in a losing effort.

Wagner continues its treacherous season-opening nine-game road trip when they head to Delaware to take on the Blue Hens on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 4 pm.
