Wagner Falls Short At Mount St. Mary's 74-58

EMMITSBURG, MD - The Wagner College Seahawks lost on the road to Mount St. Mary's 74-58 earlier tonight at Knott Arena in Emmitsburg, MD. With the loss the Seahawks fall to 2-23 and 2-14 in the NEC while the Mountaineers improve to 12-13 and 9-7 in the NEC.

The Seahawks were led by sophomore guard Chelsey Bunyer's (Shannon, IL / Eastland) 19 points and senior guard Joy Gallagher (Hazleton, PA / Hazleton), who hit for 14 points and broke the school's all-time three-point record with her 237th in the game's final minute, surpassing Susan Moffat's previous total of 236.

In the first half, with the Seahawks trailing 22-18 with 8:14 remaining the Green & White went on a 11-2 run over the next 6:15, including nine-straight points from Bunyer, to go up by their largest margin of the game at 29-24 and went into intermission with their fourth halftime lead of the season at 31-29. Bunyer's 15 first-half points, on 7-10 shooting, led the Seahawks which shot a stellar 48.4 percent (15-31). The Wagner defense also continued their strong play of late holding the Mountaineers to just 34.2 percent shooting (13-34).

In the second half the roles reversed as Mount St. Mary's shot a blistering 62.1 percent (18-29) in the decisive second-stanza while limiting the Seahawks to 38.5 percent shooting (10-26).

With the Seahawks up 38-34 with 16:22 remaining the Mount went on a game-changing 18-2 run over the next 7:45 to go up by an insurmountable margin of 52-40, in which they held the Seahawks without a field and forced eight turnovers and nine missed shots.

Wagner would close the gap to seven on the next possession with a Gallagher three pointer, but the Mountaineers would end the game on a 22-13 run to win 74-58.

For the game, Mount St. Mary's shot 49.2 percent (31-63) compared to Wagner's 48.4 percent-shooting (25-57) and outscored the Green & White in the paint 42-24.

Sophomore center Ali Ridge (Barrington, IL / Fremd) rounded out the Seahawk double-figure scorers with 13 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Freshman forward Olivia Nagle (Acton, MA / Acton Boxborough) had another solid game off the bench, matching Ridge's seven rebounds while adding six points.

Latoya Butler's 16 points off the bench led five double-figure scorers for Mount St. Mary's.

Wagner returns to Staten Island for their final home contest of the season against Long Island on Friday, Feb. 24 at 5 pm. Before the game the Seahawk community will honor seniors Joy Gallagher and Joyce Queiroz (Sao Paulo, Brazil / Colegio Spinosa) before they play their last game on Grymes Hill.
