Wagner Ends Season with 35-14 Loss at Saint Francis (PA)

Loretto, PA - The Wagner football team closed out the 2006 season taking on a 35-14 loss at host Saint Francis (PA) at DeGol Field this afternoon. The Seahawks close out the year at 4-7 overall and 0-7 in the Northeast Conference while the Red Flash end the year with a record of 3-8 and 2-5 NEC.

Wagner senior receiver Chris Turner (Syracuse, NY / Henninger) equaled the NEC record for career touchdown receptions (33) with an 18 yard scoring catch in the closing minutes in the fourth quarter. Turner, who know shares the mark with Miles Austin (Monmouth, 2002-05), ended the game with five catches for 73 yards.

Saint Francis was fueled by a 283 yard and two touchdown performance from running back Todd Harris and a three touchdown, 182 yard day from quarterback Anthony Doria

The Red Flash got their offense rolling early as the record setting duo of Luke Palko and Michael Caputo each caught TD passes for a 14-0 lead. Palko produced the first score of the game hauling in an 11 score at 6:21 in the first before Caputo answered with a juggling catch at the 2:08 mark.

Antoine Rivera added to the Saint Francis offensive production in the second quarter with a 28 yard TD reception at 11:08. In the third quarter Harris sprinted up the middle for a 50 yard touchdown as the lead went to 28-0.

Wagner finally moved the scoreboard in the third quarter scoring on a 28-yard run with just under three minutes left in the third from junior Aliga Betts (Pembroke Pines, FL / Cooper City). Betts would finish his afternoon with 75 yards on 10 carries to lead the Wagner running attack. Harris then added a Red Flash school record 90 yard touchdown run later in the quarter as the score moved to 35-7 in favor of the home team.

Late in the fourth Turner would capped off his brilliant receiving career, in which he set nearly every Wagner receiving record, with the 18-yard score from freshman Tyler Newberry (Germantown, MD / Mercerburg Prep) to produce the final outcome. Newberry was steady after taking over at quarterback in the fourth quarter completing six pass for 53 yards.

Saint Francis had 489 yards of total offense compared to 284 fro Wagner as the Seahawks were just 2 of 12 on third down in the game.

Senior Ein Williams (Neptune, NJ / Neptune) had a game high nine tackles for the Seahawks plus added a 12 yard fumble return.

The loss for Wagner ended a 13 game winning streak against the Red Flash.
