Final Stats
New Britain, CT - Central Connecticut State out gained Wagner 292-57 on the ground as the Seahawks were dealt a 27-6 loss at Arute Field earlier today. Wagner slips to 4-4 overall and 0-4 in the Northeast Conference with their fourth consecutive loss. The Blue Devils move to 6-2 over all and 2-2 in the NEC.
After setting a new NEC record with a 54 yard field goal three weeks ago at Sacred Heart, Wagner kicker Piotr Czech (Keyport, NJ / Keyport) matched that effort with another 54 yard bomb to give the Seahawks a 3-0 lead five minutes into the ball game. Czech then added a 25 yard field goal later in the first quarter after the Wagner offense stalled inside the 10 yard line.
With the Seahawks defense keep the I-AA leading rusher Justise Hairston under wraps in the first half (50 yards) the score would remain in their favor until a three yard run by the Blue Devils Adrian Hull. Hull's score followed by a botched extra point attempt would tie the score at 6-6 with three minutes left before intermission.
The team appeared to be heading to the locker rooms deadlocked, but CCSU quarterback Ryan Holmes, who was 9-9 in the first 30 minutes, tossed a 46 yard pass right on the money to Nick Colagiovanni on the final play of the half. The Blue Devils then missed a second extra point attempt as they took a 12-6 lead at the half.
The momentum continued for CCSU in the second half as they went on top 20-6 mid way through the third quarter with a 14 play 78 yard drive covering 6:35 of game time. Wagner never mounted another series scoring opportunity as the Blue Devils capped off the scoring on a - yard TD run by Jo Jo Freeman at the start of the fourth quarter.
For Wagner senior WR Chris Turner (Syracuse, NY / Henninger) caught eight passes for 44 yards as QB Matt Abbey (La Canada, CA / St. Francis) complete 17-35 fro 110 yards. Running the ball junior RB Jason Butler (Syracuse, NY / Henninger) amassed 44 yards on 11 carries.
Hairston finished his day with 151 yards on 34 carries with one TD. Holmes meanwhile was a perfect 10-10 throwing the football with the single TD pass.
Freshmen LB Chris Jaeger (Sterling, VA / Potomac Falls) led Wagner with 14 tackles (four solo) as senior FS Ian Flack (Deltona, FL / Suitland (MD) made 13 stops with eight of the solo variety.
Wagner is on the road for a second straight week next Saturday as they head to the Capital Region for a 4:00 pm tilt at Albany.
