New Britain, CT -- The Wagner College swim team got the 2006-2007 season underway earlier today at the CCSU Duals held by Central Connecticut State. The two day event which will wrap up on Sunday saw a solid showing for the Green & White in their first official meet of the season.
Wagner got things started with a third place finish in the 200 yard freestyle relay clocking a time of 1:42.61. The 200 yard backstroke followed where Connecticut native Dana Helyer (Milford, CT/Amity Reg.) turned in a great performance taking second place with a time of 2:17.41. Right on her tail was junior Heather Roman-Green (Woodstock, NY/Kingston) who nailed down third place at 2:18:02. That race turned out to be a family affair as Heather's younger sister, Brittany, a freshman at C.W. Post, trailed her big sister in fifth place with a time of 2:18.82.
The third event of the day was the 500 yard freestyle and it was simply dominated by the Seahawks. Sophomore Alexandra Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton) stole the show blitzing the rest of the field with a time of 5:11.33. Second place saw Brigitta Roser (Ithaca, NY/Lansing) cruise in at 5:15.75, while Colleen Bowman (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) took third with a time of 5:18.48.
The fourth and fifth events of the day saw a couple of second place finishes for Wagner. First in the 200 yard butterfly, junior Jess Radka (Mohnton, PA/Holy Name) logged a second place time of 2:08.39, while in the 200 yard breaststroke Kate Wilson (Brentwood, CA/Liberty) also registered a second place mark, hitting the wall at 2:30.41. That event also saw Julie Gardner (Concord, CA/Concord) and Nicole Paduano (North Haven, CT/North Haven) take fourth and fifth respectively. Freshman Jessica Hart (Summerfield, NC/Northwest) made her collegiate debut a memorable one by coming in third in the 50 yard freestyle. Hart clocked a time of 26.07.
The Seahawks closed out competition on the day grabbing second and third in the 800 yard freestyle relay with times of 7:57.55 and 8:16.72.
Wagner returns to the pool tomorrow in New Britain to finish up the two day meet. The final head to head scores will be made available following the completion of tomorrow's events.
