Sacred Heart Shuts Down Wagner 85-48

FAIRFIELD, CT - Sacred Heart showed the Wagner Seahawks why they are one of the top teams in the Northeast Conference (NEC) with an 85-48 win earlier today at the William H. Pitt Center. With the loss the Seahawks fall to 2-11 and 1-2 in the NEC while the Pioneers improve to 10-2 and 4-0 in the NEC.

Sophomore guard Megan Sullivan (Brooklyn, NY / St. Francis Prep) continued her hot play of late leading the Seahawks with 12 points and 11 rebounds for her second career double-double. Classmate center Ali Ridge (Barrington, IL / Fremd) rounded out the top scorers with 10 points and six rebounds.

Sacred Heart jumped out to an early 13-5 lead before the Seahawks ran off five straight points to make the score 13-10 with 14:32 remaining in the first half. From that point it was all Pioneers as they closed out the half on a 37-9 run, including a 21-0 spurt that spanned 6:51, to go up by a score of 50-19.

In the decisive half Sacred Heart forced 20 turnovers and held the Seahawks to just 31.8 percent shooting (7-22) compared to 48.6 percent for the Pioneers.

For the game the Seahawks shot just 32.3 percent (20-62) while Sacred Heart hit at a 46.4 percent (32-69) clip as all 11 Pioneer players found the scoring column. The Sacred Heart defense also forced 30 turnovers to go along with 17 steals.

Wagner returns to action when they host Quinnipiac Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 7 pm in the first of four-straight home games.
