Wagner Drops Seventh Straight 81-59 At CCSU

NEW BRITAIN, CT - Gabriella Guegbelet and Kim Boone combined for 53 points to help the Central Connecticut Blue Devils defeat the Wagner Seahawks 81-59 earlier tonight at Detrick Gym.

With the win the Blue Devils improve to 5-14 and 2-7 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Seahawks fall to 1-17 and 1-8 in the NEC.

Senior guard Joy Gallagher (Hazleton, PA / Hazleton) paced the Seahawks in scoring for the seventh time this season with 19 points to go along with six rebounds and three steals. Sophomore guard Chelsey Bunyer (Shannon, IL / Eastland) had 10 points and freshman forward Olivia Nagle (Acton, MA / Acton-Boxborough) deposited 10 points to round out the double-figure scorers for Wagner.

Guegbelet scored a game-high 29 points while going over 1,000 points for her career and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Boone also had 24 points for the Blue Devils, which never trailed.

CCSU scored the first eight points of the game on their way to an early 17-6 lead with 13:19 to go in the half. The resilient Seahawks would not go away though as they outscored the Blue Devils 22-15 to end the half down only four at 32-28. The Seahawks stayed in the game using one of their best shooting halves of the season hitting at a 50.0 percent-clip (13-26).

The Blue Devils used a big second half, in which they shot 58.6 percent (17-29) on their way to 49 second-stanza points, to put the Seahawks away. In addition, the Seahawk shooters went cold shooting only 37.5 percent (12-32) and were outrebounded 21-11 in the decisive half.

For the game, CCSU shot 51.9 percent (31-61) from the field compared to 43.1 percent (25-58) for the Seahawks and outrebounded Wagner 37-31.

The Seahawks are next in action Saturday, Feb. 4 at 3:00 pm when they head to the shore to take on Monmouth.
