The Wagner College women's soccer team began their 2005 season with a 1-0 loss to visiting Manhattan earlier this afternoon at the Lower Athletic Field. The Seahawks now stand at 0-1 on the year, while the Jaspers improved to 1-2 overall.
The first half ended in a scoreless tie, with Manhattan holding a 9-4 advantage in shots taken. The Jaspers continued to apply the pressure in the second half building up a 14-3 advantage in shots taken.
With the game still locked at 0-0, the Jaspers' Jess Garcia, scored the lone goal of the game from eight yards out in the 66th minute off an assist from Lauren Zdunczyk.
Despite an onslaught of shots by Manhattan, Wagner junior Ashley Wilson (Secane, PA / Upper Valley) was outstanding in goal making numerous diving stops on her way to 14 saves. Alicia DeFino made five saves in for the Jaspers.
Manhattan proved to be more aggressive throughout the contest holding a 23-7 advantage in shots taken and a 23-6 edge in fouls.
Pacing the Seahawk offense was senior Betty Rogers (Mt. Holly, NJ / George School), who had two shots.
Wagner returns to action on Sunday at Colgate for a 1:00 pm contest.
